Frequently Asked Questions

How long do sessions last?

All sessions are approximately an hour and a half. For Buggy Active sessions the session leader will wait a few minutes at the beginning in case anyone is running late, and if you need to leave early (for example for a school pickup) that’s fine.  For other sessions such as Forest Play, you can join and leave at any time.

What age are sessions for?

All sessions are suitable for parents/carers with babies from birth – two years. Some sessions (like Little Explorers) are more suited to toddlers as there will be a short walk, but smaller babies are welcome and will still benefit from the fresh air and sensory experience.

How soon after the birth of my baby can I attend sessions?

If you’d like to come to a buggy active session, this involves a buggy walk and postnatal exercise. You will be asked to complete a health screening form before attending so our session leaders can be sure they’re working safely with you, but generally, you can join in the exercises when your baby is six weeks old (or 12 after a c-section), providing that your doctor has given you the go ahead. If you’d like to come along before then, you’re welcome to come along for the walk and to meet other new parents. All other sessions – come along as soon as you feel you’d like to!

Do I have to pay for sessions?

No! Babi Actif is a funded project and all sessions are completely free.

Can I bring my partner?

Yes. If you’d like to come with your partner (or another carer e.g. grandparent, friend etc) you’re more than welcome to come along with another adult, especially if you’re nervous about getting out with your new baby for the first time. Whatever makes you comfortable – please just let us know so we know how many adults to expect on the day.

Are sessions cancelled if it rains?

Sessions are rarely cancelled, but obviously, it does happen sometimes, for example when we have extreme weather, particularly high winds. If a session is cancelled, an update will be posted to our sessions timetable on the website and to the Facebook page, and if you have booked in advance you will receive an email.  At some locations, there is an option for indoor activity if it’s very wet – but usually, the fun carries on in the rain!

Do I need any special clothing or equipment?

Bring anything you might need to feed/change/comfort your baby and a drink of water for yourself.  Although special outdoor kit isn’t required, make sure you and baby are dressed for the weather (remember babies will get cold if they’re static e.g. in a buggy active session). For buggy active, wear clothes you are comfortable moving in – leggings are ideal, and trainers if you have them. Layers are good, so you can adjust your temperature if you get hot and sweaty!

Can I feed my baby during a session?

You can do whatever you need to do for your baby during a session, so yes, absolutely! Groups are informal, inclusive spaces and session leaders will make adaptations to assist you in whatever you need to do to feel comfortable.

Who runs the sessions?

All session leaders are specialists in the types of activity they provide (Buggy Active session leaders, for example, are all qualified personal trainers with a specialism in pre- and postnatal fitness and forest play leaders are all Forest School trained).  In addition, all session leaders are DBS checked and first aid qualified.

Will I lose my place if I don’t attend?

No, although if we have large numbers of people attending we may remove your name from the list if you haven’t attended in a 6-week block. It’s really helpful if you can email or message us to let us know if you won’t be attending, but we understand that life with a little one is not always predictable and that you may not always be able to attend sessions you’ve booked for. For this reason, we usually experience high numbers of non-attendance and so book more people on sessions than we have the capacity for. In the unlikely event of everyone attending it is possible that sessions will be over-subscribed and the session leader may need to limit numbers for everyone’s safety. In that instance please note that entry will be on a first-come-first-served basis.

Do I have to book for every session in a term/block?

No. People usually really enjoy sessions and come to as many as they can, but you’re more than welcome to just come to one and see if you like it, or to just come to certain dates (for example, you may be working some days). Please just give us as much notice as you can if you don’t want to come to certain dates so we can allocate your space to someone else.

Are sessions delivered in Welsh or English?

It depends on the session. Most of our session leaders are Welsh learners, although we do also have some Welsh speakers. Sessions are therefore usually either completely bi-lingual, or delivered mostly through the medium of English, but with Welsh songs and stories etc ( for example in forest play sessions).

Do I need a special pram?

No! Come along with whatever you have.  A rain cover might be useful if you have one.

How fit do I need to be?

All sessions will be adapted to the needs of the participants, so just come along and have a go.

Can I bring older children with me?

Sessions are designed for children 2 years and under, however, older children can accompany younger siblings  (please let us know in advance).

Can I take part if pregnant?

Babi Actif is designed for the first 1000 days of a child’s life, from conception to their second birthday, so absolutely yes! Just let your session leader know if you are attending a Buggy Active session so that they can adapt the exercises for you.
